I heard a rumour once that tables like these were used as nightstands in the palace of Louis the X.5%4# - can't quite remember which number he was. If you were a fly on the wall in the bedroom of such a royal, you would probably find a smartphone, false teeth or a comic book sat atop one of these night tables.
